About Dr. Stephen J. Cina
Dr. Stephen J. Cina has over 25 years of autopsy experience dating back to medical school. He has completed close to 6000 autopsies and testified in court and depositions over 300 times. Prior to becoming the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner of Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) from January 2007 to May 2011, he was a Forensic Pathology Consultant for Northern Colorado and 80% of Wyoming (approximately 90,000 square miles) where he also served as a Coroner/Medical Examiner. He also served as Chairman of Pathology at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado where he was the managing partner In a private practice Pathology group. Prior to moving to Colorado, Dr. Cina served as a Regional Medical Examiner in the United States Air Force covering suspicious deaths and aircraft fatalities from Ecuador to Alaska and Curacao to Korea. He most recently was the Associate Medical Director of a historic TIssue Bank In South Florida.
In addition to his subspecialty training as a forensic pathologist, he completed a fellowship In Surgical Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. His research in prostate and bladder cancer earned him admission to the prestigious Arthur Purdy Stout Society and to the International Society of Urological Pathologists. He recently completed his fifth term on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Medical Examiners, is the current Vice-President of the National Association of Medical Examiners, and is a past president of the Florida Association of Medical Examiners. As a board certified anatomic and forensic pathologist, Dr. Cina has authored over 100 scientific publications and book chapters and served as the Forensic Pathology section editor for eMedicine.
In September 2012, Dr. Cina took on his greatest professional challenge as the Chief Medical Examiner of Cook, County (Chicago), Illinois. He has been widely acknowledged as having "saved" the Office, restoring it from a time of crisis to national prominence. During the last few years, Dr. Cina has lectured at numerous local high schools, colleges, national speaking engagements, and community functions. In addition, Dr. Cina is a Board - Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (D-ABMDI). He has relocated to Colorado and is a practicing forensic pathologist with his free time spent golfing, fishing, and taking on challenging forensic consults.
