About Dr. Stephen J. Cina
Dr. Stephen J. Cina has over 30 years of autopsy experience dating back to medical school. He has completed close to 7000 autopsies and testified in court and depositions over 300 times. Prior to moving to Colorado in 2001, Dr. Cina served as a Regional Medical Examiner in the United States Air Force covering suspicious deaths and aircraft fatalities from Ecuador to Alaska and Curacao to Korea. From 2001 to 2006, he was a Forensic Pathology Consultant for Northern Colorado and 80% of Wyoming (approximately 90,000 square miles) where he also served as a Coroner/Medical Examiner. He concurrently served as Chairman of Pathology at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado where he was the managing partner In a private practice Pathology group. In 2007 he was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Examiner of Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) prior to serving as Chief Medical Examiner for Cook County, IL (Chicago) from 2012 to 2016. He has been widely acknowledged as having "saved" the Office, restoring it from a time of crisis to national prominence.
In addition to his subspecialty training as a forensic pathologist, he completed a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. His research in prostate and bladder cancer earned him admission to the prestigious Arthur Purdy Stout Society and to the International Society of Urological Pathologists. He completed five terms on the Board of Directors and is the past Vice-President of the National Association of Medical Examiners and he has served as President of the Florida Association of Medical Examiners. As a board certified anatomic and forensic pathologist, Dr. Cina has authored over 100 scientific publications and book chapters and served as the Forensic Pathology section editor for eMedicine.
Dr. Cina has lectured at numerous local high schools, colleges, national and international speaking engagements, and community functions. In addition, Dr. Cina is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (D-ABMDI). In 2016 he relocated to Colorado and is a practicing forensic pathologist with his free time spent golfing, fishing, and taking on challenging forensic consults.
